The Douro River begins in Spain and flows roughly east / west through northern Portugal, reaching the seaint Portugal's second largest city, Oporto.
Since it is a fast-flowing river with rapids and narrow ravines, it was domesticated in the last 25 years by the construction of 8 dams along its length, giving it, in most places, a calm and lake-like appearance, being one of the most visited regions in the northern part of Portugal.
